You’re So Vain
These exquisite orchids were photographed at an indoor, botanical garden. Sorry, I didn’t note the variety.
When it comes to orchids, there is a lot of variety. There are over 28,000 species in the Orchidaceae family. Just do a search for orchid images and you’ll get an idea of the many beautiful, unusual, amazing – and sometimes silly – varieties exist.

Woodland Floor Decor
This was a delightful find on an autumn walk through the woods in northeast Wisconsin. The tallest of these tiny red mushrooms was about 2 inches.
We stumbled upon these while trekking to some waterfall site in Marinette County, Wisconsin. We found a number of colorful mushrooms on that trip.

The Autumn Heart
An early morning sunrise, shining behind this leaf on one of our lilac bushes, brought out its brilliant fall color and intricate detail.
This is one of those times where something just caught my eye. I was walking by a window, just about sunrise, when I noticed this bright leaf on a bush. I quickly grabbed my camera, hoping to catch the beauty before the shaft of light piercing the bush moved off this leaf. I was there in time.
I love big landscape vistas. I also love the smaller vistas. As I always say – whatever catches my eye.

Serious Sunrise
There was a very serious mood to this morning’s sky as the sun breached the horizon behind the lighthouse and pier at Algoma, Wisconsin. It was a good morning to be on Lake Michigan’s western shore.
I was up early to make my way to Algoma, hoping for a worthwhile sunrise. I was not disappointed. The temperatures were cool but the sky had a warming effect…at least on the psyche. This shot was taken from the harbor embankment at the marina.
I’ve got a few other good shots from this vantage point that I’ll be working on when time allows. Watch for a wide, panorama shot of this morning’s sunrise in the future.

Carnival of Autumn Color
The wide variety of hues in this patch of sumac reminded me of the bright colors you might find at an autumn carnival.
I had a few minutes before I had to be an an appointment so I thought I would make a quick stop at a local waterfall to, hopefully, catch a beautiful fall scene. Well, the waterfall didn’t have much water falling; barely a trickle. Even if it were flowing, there wasn’t much color in the foliage surrounding it. However, there was a small patch of sumac in the area that was bursting with color. Normally the sumac turns a bright red. I’ve not encountered sumac in transition with such a wide range of colors before. It made my stop worthwhile.

October Surprise
I encountered a number of surprises on this early morning visit to the lake shore at Kewaunee, Wisconsin.
The morning light was a very pleasant surprise. The variations of color in the sky, from yellow to blue with a hint of purple on the fringes, was another welcome surprise. The rough water was an exciting surprise – normally the lake is pretty calm in the early morning hours.
The overall result of this image was a very nice surprise. I didn’t think I’d be able to capture as much of the dynamic range as I did. As bright as the sky looked and as dark as the water looked, I thought it would be difficult to see much of the detail in this image.

The Fall Bloom
One of the favorite flowers of autumn are now in bloom. Mums are colorful, prolific and as popular as pumpkin spice and apple orchards in the fall. In fact, these mums were photographed on a recent visit to an apple orchard in central Ohio. These were one of many colorful varieties of potted mums they had on sale. I selected these beauties because of their fall-like colors and the various stages of blooms in this bunch; from buds to the full flowers.

Red Vine
On a hike though Wisconsin woodlands, the deep red color of the leaves on this vine, draped across a moss covered rock, caught my eye.
This was on a trip to photograph waterfalls in Marinette County. On a very difficult, rocky trail to a viewing spot, I noticed the contrasting color. Even though I was there for the waterfall, I couldn’t resist a quick capture.

Wilderness Waterway
This is a panoramic view of Horseshoe Falls in Marinette County, Wisconsin. It is one of my favorite waterfalls out of the many we visited in Marinette County last weekend. I found the setting and the water swirling in and out of view very appealing.
This is a large image that needs to be viewed large to be appreciated. Thankfully, if you click on the photo, it will open a full screen version in a new browser tab.
I combined five separate shots, holding my camera in “portrait” orientation to create this detailed, wide view. Though it doesn’t seem so from this image, it was a cloudy, rainy day. (I don’t think it was raining at this moment.)
There are 14 waterfalls in Marinette County. We didn’t have time to visit them all, because I can spend a lot of time at each one, trying to find all the angles, changing lenses and experimenting with a variety of camera settings. We visited seven of the 14. Most of them were better than I was hoping for, based on the photos I’d seen on the web or in brochures.

Sedum Bumbler
This time of year, the pollinators are busy in my wife’s flower beds. This is a bumble bee browsing through the sedum flowers.
This is a comparatively small image because I cropped in, to enlarge the bee to a size where you can see some of the detail. I don’t own a true “macro” lens, so I make my 16-55mm lens do the heavy lifting.
The image is larger than you can see on this page, but if you click the photo a larger version will open in a new browser tab to give you more detail.
