The Delicate Dogwood

Dogwood, Tree, Flower

A cluster of delicate blooms from a dogwood tree growing in northwest Missouri. Some of these petal appear thin and nearly translucent. The dogwood captures the fleeting beauty of spring in bloom.  (These blooms are long gone.)

Duck Duck

Mallard, Duck, Male, Water

Here are a couple of colorful, male mallard ducks. They were two of the hundreds of ducks that congregate at the lagoon at Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary in Green Bay, Wisconsin.  There are always a variety of ducks and geese and assorted other birds and wildlife.

Birdhouse, Weathered, Wood, Old

This birdhouse has seen a lot of fledglings in its day. It’s also seen better days.  Still, the abundance of days past and weathering have added to its character and charm.

This birdhouse hangs from a tree limb at my in-laws northwest Missouri homestead. Nothing spectacular about this image, but I find it soothing to look at.  I love the weathered woodgrain, the grasses and twigs and the strand of wire keeping it together.

You can get a better look at the detail in the woodgrain if you click on the photo.

Longing to Be Charmed

Black Snake, Snake, Reptile

I’m not an expert, but I believe this is a common black ratsnake.  Nearing the end of a hike through the woods, my wife spotted it first and I hurried to grab a photo. I didn’t get much before it quickly retreated into the brush at Bluff Woods Conservation Area in northwestern Missouri.

Black ratsnakes are non-venomous; they kill their prey by constriction. They’re best known for their color combination of a shiny bluish-black body undercoated by a whitish belly.  They’re harmless to humans but they can startle you by their stealth and, often, large size.

To get a better, more detailed look at those scales and tongue (mostly a blur) click on the photo.

Path to Glory

Contrails, Sunrise, Lighthouse, Algoma

The upper half of the Algoma, Wisconsin lighthouse was framed by contrail streaks just before sunrise. Algoma is located on the western shore of Lake Michigan.

It was a crazy sky that morning.  There were low, dark clouds on the horizon and high, light wispy clouds above.  Adding to the crazy were a number of contrails being highlighted by the hidden sun. There were more contrails than what you see here. Watch for another, wider shot from this same morning that I plan on posting in the near future.

Bonneville

Pontiac Bonneville, Car, Classic Car

A classic car, Pontiac Bonneville, with its shiny chrome bumper and accents was a classy addition to the 2014 annual Car Show in Algoma, Wisconsin. You gotta love that grill and sleek headlight design. The car’s distinctive styling, with its sizable front bumper and wide grill, evokes fond memories of a dearly departed automotive era.

I’m not enough of a car aficionado to tell you what year this car was built.  If you are, share your knowledge in a comment.

Adjusting to the Morning Light

Sunrise, Lake, Dock, Bass Lake, IN, Indiana

The clouds and the rising sun seem to be collaborating to provide the right balance of color and light. This is an early morning view of Bass Lake, Indiana in September.

I love the way the sunrise is illuminating the low, misty kind of clouds in the upper right half of this scene. Give me a lake with interesting clouds and a rising sun any day.

Unpretentious Beauty

Flowers, Wildflowers, Daisy, Daisies

A bunch of wild daisies that bloomed annually and self propagated liberally every spring. I love the simplicity of white petals and bright yellow centers standing out against a blur of green foliage.

These are from a patch of daisies that we welcomed every spring in our yard.  Every year the main patch would expand a little and other little patches would pop up in the lawn nearby.

Wisps of Grandeur

Sunrise, Lighthouse, Algoma, Lake Michigan

A tranquil sunrise casts warm hues across the sky behind the Algoma, Wisconsin lighthouse and pier. The calm waters of the harbor offer a colorful welcome to fishing boats as the day dawns.

Timeworn Topography

Rock Formation, Badlands, South Dakota

A rugged Badlands landscape features a prominent rock formation layered with sedimentary rock.  I took this shot while driving through the Badlands National Park in South Dakota.  (My wife was actually doing the driving.)

When processing this image, I spent a good deal of time experimenting with replacing the sky.  The sky you see is the sky that was present at the time of this photo.  I think it looks pretty lackluster and wondered if I could get a more dramatic look.  Everything I tried just didn’t seem to fit so I left it au natural.
