White Crowned Sparrow
This white crowned sparrow was an unexpected surprise.
While taking photos of a sunrise at the marina in Algoma, Wisconsin, I noticed some movement on the ground. Each time I would change position, this little bird would flit along the ground…but never far.
Eventually, I turned the camera his way. He seemed cooperative, allowing me to move within 10 feet for shots like this.
Backlighting
I’ve taken a lot of photos of the Algoma lighthouse over the years, but never one from this angle. With the tree to the left and the grass in front, it looks like an altogether different place.
The Algoma, Wisconsin harbor is before the lighthouse, the sun rising above Lake Michigan is behind the lighthouse and the tree on the left is one that lines the parking lot of the youth club.
The telephoto lens I used makes them all seem much closer to each other.

Gentle Reminder
Temperatures are cooling and summer flowers are fading as autumn moves in. This image of a zinnia can serve as a reminder of the beauty that will return.
A little post-processing fiddling gave this image its soft feel.

Short Stuff
This cute rascal is a Ruby-throated hummingbird. A tiny, zippy bird that is one of my favorites…and most challenging to photograph. This particular one seems to be a short, stocky gal – but she wears it well, don’t you think?
I believe the hummingbirds that have entertained us this year have flown south for the winter. We haven’t seen one for a week or so.

Simple Butterfly
I was able to catch this butterfly resting for a brief moment on the purple coneflowers near our home. Butterflies have been scarce this year – at least around our place – so I was glad to capture this one digitally.

On a Mission
I’m always taking photos of bugs – and bees are some of my favorites. I usually catch bees busy about their business, working on flowers. It’s rare when I can capture one in flight, and even rarer to catch them in focus. This was one of those rare moments.
A couple of other images where I was able to catch bees in flight are Popular Spot and The Beeline.

Moss & Flames
On a hike through the woods, my eyes were drawn to this scene. Sunlight streaming through the trees illuminated a patch of moss growing on a decaying log.
What caught my eye was the little, bright red, hair-like plants growing from the green moss bed. The way the light hit it, it reminded me of little flames.

Flowing Beauty
Hats off to the designer of this man-made waterfall area of the Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The multiple streams of cascading water makes a beautiful scene.
If you look closely, you’ll notice a few ducks preening themselves on the shelf on the right-hand side of the photo.
This photo was taken using a tripod and a longer than normal exposure to give the cascading water that soft look.

Sunrise Pier Fishermen
The Kewaunee Lighthouse is situated at the end of a very long pier that stretches out into Lake Michigan. It is a very popular spot for fishermen. Behind these group of early morning anglers, the powerful sun begins its ascent.
If you look closely, you’ll notice a small boat in the very bottom right corner.

Among a patch of tall grasses, this purple cosmos makes a bold stand.
