The Queen’s Sceptre

Queen Anne's Lace, Flower, Wildflower

A close-up shot showcases the early stages of Queen Anne’s Lace, bathed in warm sunlight. Early morning dew clings to the delicate stems of the plant and a lone strand of spider web. The early light and tiny dewdrops highlight its structure and adding some sparkle.

Branching Out

Spring, Leaf, Leaves, Green, Macro
One of my favorite spring images are the new, delicate leaves that sprout from  trees emerging from their winter dormancy.

As I walk through the woods I’m always scanning my surroundings for something that catches my eye.  This sprig was captured by the late afternoon sunlight and highlighted by a back-light of filtering through the trees, making the very common uncommonly interesting.  (At least to me.) It was just another twig among millions that caught my eye.

Monarch Squadron

Butterfly, Butterflies, Monarch, Monarch Butterfly, Purple Aster, Flowers
All three of these monarch butterflies are in flight.  They were circling, and eventually landing and feeding on, the purple asters in a vacant field near the building where I work.

I didn’t see a lot of butterflies this year, but when I did, it was all within a few weeks at the end of the summer. This photo was taken in late September.

In the interest of full disclosure, you should know this is a composite image.  I combined three separate photos – each with one butterfly – to create this image of three butterflies. They were all photographed exactly as you see them…in the location that you see them…just at different moments.

Lawn Twinklers

Lawn, Dew, Grass, Green, Bokeh, Sparkle, Landscape

Now and then, we need to look at the simple things around us with new eyes…from different angles.

This is a photo of my lawn early last spring – before the first mowing. I took this photo from just a couple of inches from the ground, early in the morning while it was still wet with dew. The circles in the background are all dew drops on grass in the background catching the light. Because I used a short depth of field with a telephoto lens, the background sparkles are out of focus.

It’s a simple image…but something about it is very appealing to me.

Party Lights

Leaf, Leaves, Colorful, Spring, Branches, Trees, Bokeh, Bright

It’s the middle of winter and my last few posts have featured some pretty dreary tones.  I thought it was time for some color so I did a little browsing and found this gem waiting on my hard drive since last spring.

These leaves, photographed in the woods of Northeast Wisconsin (near my home), were early spring sprouts; debuting last April. The way the sunlight illuminates them, it reminded me of colorful party lights strung though the trees.

Take a look at the larger size by clicking on the image.  I think  you’ll find it a better view.
