B&W

Sunrise and Dark Shadows

Monochrome, B&W, Lighthouse, Kewaunee

The Kewaunee, Wisconsin lighthouse stands at the end of a long pier under a dramatic, morning sky.

I decided to process this one as a monochrome image.  It was a dark and ominous scene and, though it was a little after sunrise, there wasn’t much color in the sky.  I think the black and white treatment accentuates the contrast between the dark clouds and the light background reflecting off the surface of the water.

Sweet Ride

Child, Swing, Monochrome, Girl

This sweetie was enjoying her backyard swing set. The wind-tossed hair makes this a captivating image for me.

I took this photo from about 70 feet away, just sitting and watching the grandchildren having fun on a sunny, breezy, early spring afternoon.

Perfect Little Piggies

Baby, Toes, Feet, Sleeping

I caught this sweet, newborn while napping with his perfect, little toes on display.

This is the latest edition to our family; a grandson.  Born a few months ago and a few states away, this was our first opportunity to meet him.  We had a great time with him and his siblings, of which you will see more of in future posts, I’m sure.

I like this photo because it does focus on the foot and those perfect little round piggies.  There is, also, something very sweet and peaceful about a sleeping newborn.

Lake Light Bright

Lighthouse, Sunbeams, Sunrise, Monochrome, Kewaunee, Lake Michigan

The rising sun seemed to be striving to hold its own against an encroaching cloud bank behind the Kewaunee, Wisconsin lighthouse and pier. Kewaunee is located on the western shore of Lake Michigan.

This shot was captured in color but I thought it would be more dramatic in monochrome. Even though the sun is providing a stellar performance, the overall image maintains a dark and brooding feel.  It wasn’t a great morning for sunrise photos but he sunbeams captured in this frame seem pretty cool to me.

As always, I think the images look best when viewed full-screen. You can do so by clicking on the photo.

Emotional Distancing

Lighthouse, Monochrome, Emotional

In times of darkness and difficulty, it is only natural that we look to The Light.

This is a very emotionally moving image for me. Without getting too sappy; this image speaks what my heart has been feeling amidst the recent chaos, confusion, and wholesale upheaval of our world.

In these times, I’m not looking to some activist group or the government or some celebrity or even well-intentioned family and friends for clear guidance and direction. I look to the Light of the World, Christ Jesus and His Word to bring understanding, direction and peace to my life.

I got up early to capture the sunrise at Algoma, WI.  However, the sun and sky didn’t provide what I was hoping for. Still, I kept shooting.  After all, I’d made the effort to get there, maybe something of interest would emerge.  I thought it was pretty much a “learning experience” until I viewed this frame on the computer. The color was pretty bland, so I decided to convert it to monochrome and…  Well, I think I found a diamond in the rough.  It’s not a great “photographic effort” technically, but it moves me.  (That’s why we call it, “Art.”)

I think this image is much more powerful when viewed larger. You can see a full-screen image by clicking on the photo.

Flowing Focus

Poppy, Flower, Mono, Monochrome, MacroAfter a light spring rain, I photographed the back side of a freshly bloomed poppy.  The water droplets were the point of interest to me.

When I opened the image up on my computer for processing, I thought a monochrome version held more promise.  The full-color version was nice, but this one seemed to draw me in more.

Infinitely Glassy

Bottles, Reflection, Infinity Mirror, Glass

The infinity mirror effect of these unique glass bottles is mesmerizing.  The reflective nature of the different shaped bottles, combined with the infinity mirror effect captured my gaze for quite some time.  This is a work of modern art on display at the Milwaukee Public Museum.  I thought a monochrome treatment worked well for this display.

One of the most interesting aspects of this image – at least, for me – is the fact that you can’t see my reflection in this image.  I’m standing right in front of these reflective bottles (about 2 feet away) and there is nothing of me, or others in the room, to be seen.

Descent to Vertigo

Steps, Woods, Monochrome, Roche-A-Cri State Park
Going down! These steps are part of the arduous 303 step stairway to a scenic view at Roche-A-Cri State Park near Friendship, Wisconsin. It’s quite a climb to the top but worth the view and a welcome place to rest before beginning the descent.

I took a few photos of the stairway and thought this one was most interesting because of the turns and the angle of the shot.  This was shot with a wide-angle lens (12mm). I processed this photo in both color and monochrome and asked my wife to pick the one she preferred. She liked the B&W best. So here it is.

Drawn to The Light

Lighthouse, Kewaunee, WI, Lake Michigan, Monochrome, B&W

The light dances upon the waves of Lake Michigan as it gently leads you to the Kewaunee lighthouse and the powerful sun beyond.

I snapped this image some time ago and finally got around to processing it. I decided to make it a monochrome image, intentionally making it softer is some areas and gritty in others.

I particularly like the cross lines created by the tiny light reflections on the waves; much more so than the lines radiating from the sun. This was taken from shore using a telephoto lens.

Tuesday’s Child

Child Portrait, Monochrome, Child, Girl
They say… “Tuesday’s child is full of grace.” This child seems to be blessed with full measure of grace and a double measure of cuteness.

This is what I consider a candid portrait; where I simply follow the subject as they roam around snapping frames while they do whatever they would normally do. Using this approach, you end up snapping a lot of pictures trying to find a good pose or compelling expression. With a child this young, you usually won’t have much success trying to get them to pose.
