Kewaunee
Larger Light Looming
As powerful as the Kewaunee, Wisconsin lighthouse lamp may be, it is no match for the power and majesty of the full moon of March 27, 2013.
I was pleasantly surprised at how well this image turned out; at how clearly the Fresnel lens of the lighthouse can be seen. The surprising part…this photo was taken from the shore. Anyone familiar with the Kewaunee lighthouse knows the lighthouse sits at the end of a very long pier that extends 750 feet from shore.
To get this image I used a 300mm lens with a 2X teleconverter (effectively doubling the reach of the lens). It is simply luck that the focus was as sharp as it is since I had to focus manually. (A number of other shots that night were not so sharp.) Under low light conditions, particularly with the teleconverter, the camera’s auto-focus doesn’t work.
Normally, without the brightness of the full moon behind it, the lighthouse lamp would show up as a big, bright white blob.

Grasping at Straws
Nature offers plenty to keep keen observers occupied and avid photographers snap happy. While tromping though the Kewaunee Marshlands Walk yesterday I noticed this interesting display of nature.
This is some delicate vine that coiled itself around nearby grasses and, though dormant, is still maintaining its grip well into the middle of winter.
The www.cityofkewaunee.org website describes the Marshlands Walk: “This quiet and peaceful boardwalk winds its way through the heart of the Kewaunee River Marsh. Located just north of the Kewaunee Landing, this wooden boardwalk goes through an area of natural marshland vegetation revealing a wealth of different animal and plant species. One can bird watch, fish or just enjoy the scenic views at the end of the boardwalk while sitting on the deck benches looking out at the Kewaunee River. The walkway was constructed in 1993 in a cooperative effort between the City of Kewaunee and the Wisconsin Coastal Management Program”

Splendour Rising
Morning Rough – Kewaunee, WI Lighthouse
Warming Up
The lighthouse and pier at Kewaunee, Wisconsin awaits the warming power of the sun as it begins its rise over Lake Michigan.
This photo was taken at the end of November, so it was a pretty cool morning and, as you can see by the rough seas on the right side of the pier, it was quite windy as well.

Dawn Highlights
I know, I know…there’s no shortage of sunrise/sunset photos…or lighthouse photos…or both together (particularly in my collection). And I know there are those who think, after you’ve seen the first dozen or so, they get a bit boring. Not to me! That’s why the sunrise/lighthouse combination is one of my favorite and most sought after photos.
To me, every sunrise is different, every cloud formation is unique. Every one of them has their own mark of beauty and my personal challenge is to capture that beauty to share with others…or just remind myself of the wonder of that particular morning.
On this particular morning, the lower edges of the clouds were highlighted in amazing color as the sun prepared to rise over Lake Michigan and the Kewaunee, Wisconsin lighthouse. The beauty, as you see it here, lasted only a few minutes. I was happy to grab it and offer it to you.

Sunrise Pier Fishermen
The Kewaunee Lighthouse is situated at the end of a very long pier that stretches out into Lake Michigan. It is a very popular spot for fishermen. Behind these group of early morning anglers, the powerful sun begins its ascent.
If you look closely, you’ll notice a small boat in the very bottom right corner.

Fishermen by the Lighthouse
You know me. I’m a sucker for a sunrise…with a lighthouse…and a few clouds to add interest. The fishermen on the pier is the cherry on top.
The pier at Kewaunee, Wisconsin is a popular spot with fishermen during the fall salmon run. This was an early morning, the sun rising behind the Kewaunee lighthouse.

Beach Grass
A gentle breeze nudged the beach grass awake to witness the impending sunrise. This photo was taken at dawn on the shore of Lake Michigan at Kewaunee, Wisconsin.
I find this image very calming. It evokes daydreams about relaxing on some exotic distant shore with my sweetie, waiting for the sun to rise.
