Inclined to Fall

Fall, Fall Foliage, Leaves, Autumn, Woods, Forest
This fall scene was spotted in the waning days of a Wisconsin autumn…the days when more leaves were on the ground than on the trees.

Lake Spirits Rising

Kewaunee, Wisconsin, Lake Michigan, Sunrise, Blue, Clouds, Sunset
Wispy clouds, illuminated by the rising sun, provided an interesting backdrop to the Kewaunee, Wisconsin lighthouse and pier.  Kewaunee is a small community on the western shore of Lake Michigan.

October Canopy

Fall, Autumn, Colors, Leaves, Leaf, Yellow, Orange, Green
“Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower.”  ~  Albert Camus

The changing leaves from this maple tree provided a colorful autumn canopy.

Dead Leaf Butterfly – Open

Dead Leaf Butterfly, Butterfly, Wings, Kallima inachus
This is the colorful side of the Dead Leaf Butterfly. The coloring and marking on the upper side of their wings is dramatically different from the bottom side of the wings.

When the wings are folded up, this butterfly looks just like a brown, dried leaf. Its camouflage is very convincing. (See my previous post – Dead Leaf Butterfly) As you can see in this photo, when the Dead Leaf Butterfly opens its wings, it becomes an attractive, exotic beauty.

The Dead Leaf Butterfly  is a nymphalid butterfly found in tropical Asia from India to Japan.

You can get a better view of the detail in this colorful side of the Dead Leaf by looking at the larger version; available by clicking on the photo.

Reclining Monarch

Butterfly, Monarch, Monarch Butterfly, Purple Aster, Wildflowers, This is a butterfly common to our neighborhood and most of North America. This is the much-loved monarch butterfly.  I found this one on a cool morning, perched among some purple asters growing wild in a field. Because of the early, cool conditions, this monarch was moving slow and the asters hadn’t opened yet.

Orange Adorned Butterfly

Butterfly, Orange, Macro, Profile, Butterfly Palace, Branson, MO
This little beauty was content to pose for a photo or two.  I don’t know what kind of butterfly it is. It was one of hundreds we walked among at the Butterfly Palace in Branson, MO.  I was able to snap several other unique butterflies there and will share them in the days and weeks to come.  Stay tuned.

Fire Above

Clouds, Sunrise, Sunset, Lighthouse, Kewaunee, WI, Lake Michigan
A unique effect, created by the sun highlighting the bottom of the clouds above the Kewaunee, WI lighthouse and pier. This was just moments before the sun would breach the Lake Michigan horizon.  If you look closely, you can see fishermen on the pier, hoping for a bit of early morning angling action.

I take a lot of sunrise photos from the shore of Lake Michigan.  I live a couple of miles from shore so I’m in the habit of looking to the sky a half hour or so before sunrise.  If the sky shows any promise, and it’s a day when I don’t have to be somewhere else like work or church, I head to the beach.

You never know how it’s going to turn out.  There are days when things look promising but the sky never makes good on that promise.  But, on other days, it can be breathtaking.

I take a lot of sunrise photos because no two sunrises are the same….except those with no clouds at all. It’s the clouds that make a sunrise worth capturing.  When I look to the early morning sky, I’m looking for cloud….usually light wispy ones.  These weren’t wispy, but the effect was well worth the trip.

Sunny Side Up

Gebera Daisy, Daisy, Flower, Orange, Macro
I put the macro mojo to work on this flower photo. It’s a Gerbera Daisy I picked up from a local florist…just to photograph it.

Gerbera daisies are big, bold and beautiful. They are nearly perfect, so much so, they’ll make you wonder if they’re artificial. Geberas bloom in nearly every color (except true blues and purples) on long, thick, sturdy stems. You can expect them to last a week or more in the vase, making them a favorite of flower arrangers and home decorators.

It is well worth looking at the larger version for the details of the flower’s center. To see it, just click the photo.
