Hear Me Roar

Orange

Orange Wave

Orange, Fence, Plastic, Curve, Curvy

“To me, photography is an art of observation. It’s about finding something interesting in an ordinary place… I’ve found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.” – Elliott Erwitt

Thank you, Mr. Erwitt,  because I don’t have much to say about this one.  It’s a bend in a bit of loose plastic fencing.

Wild and Woolly

Milkweed Tussock Caterpillar, Caterpillar, Orange, Black, Milkweed

This is one hungry, little dust-mop! Look at how much of that leaf it’s already consumed. It is a Milkweed Tussock Caterpillar.

When I took this picture, I didn’t notice the interesting, synchronized curl to those orange and white tufts of hair. It just looked like your run-of-the-mill fuzzy caterpillar. Enlarging the image, often reveals surprising aspects of the insect world.

By the way, the head is that shiny black part on the edge of the leaf, mostly covered by hair.  (He needs to trim his bangs.)

This was actually in a very difficult spot to photograph due to other vegetation being in the way. To try and get a better shot, I slowly, gently bent the leaf he was on. They must not have sticky feet because, at the slightest angel, it immediately slid off the leaf and into the dense weeds below…never to be seen again.

Garden Torches

Tulips, Orange, Red, Yellow, Spring, Colorful

After a bit of  a delay, due to an unusually cold start to spring, the tulips are now in top form throughout northeast Wisconsin.

In a sea of red and yellow tulips, these orange toned specimens stood out.  The color reminded me of flames – like garden torches.

These beauties were found in Manitowoc’s West of the Lake Gardens. The garden delayed their season opening by a couple of weeks due to the weather.

Dreamsicle

Lighthouse, Sunrise, Kewaunee, WI, Wisconsin, Lake Michigan, Sunset

Something about the color of the sky and reminded me of Dreamsicles.

This, of course, is the lighthouse and pier at Kewaunee, Wisconsin. The rising sun is positioned directly behind the navigational marker on the other side of the channel leading to the harbor.  This was the sunrise, as I saw it, on Saturday, April 20, 2013.

Twirling Floral Skirt

Poppy, Macro, Flower, Red
Beside my wife’s flower bed, sprouting from a crack in the sidewalk, we have a cluster of sweet, tiny, pink poppies that appeared on their own.

I took this photo in the early morning hours.  I call it Twirling Floral Skirt because it reminds me of a young girl spinning around to make her skirt flow out.

Queen’s Morning

Silhouette, Sunrise, Sunset. Wildflowers
Yesterday morning started with a light blanket of fog.  As the sun pushed it’s way up through the foggy horizon, it created a nice silhouette of some Queen Anne’s Lace that grows at the edge of the field of oats that is next to lawn of our country home.

In photography, sometimes lighting is everything.

This is simple Queen Anne’s Lace. It is just beginning to open up to that flat base of tiny white flowers.

The lighting and color of the background are what make this a worthwhile post. The light was provided by a rising sun. The background is a simple concrete wall – the foundation of our home.

This kind of lighting is why the times around sunrise and sunset are called the “Golden Hour” in photography.
