Forest of Friendship Waterfall

Waterfall, Pond, Atchison

A small, tranquil waterfall flows into a pond filled with lily pads, surrounded by lush greenery and tall grasses. This serene setting was found at the International Forest of Friendship near Atchison, Kansas. It is known as the “Joe Carrigan Memorial Waterfall.”

We enjoyed our recent visit to the International Forest of Friendship.  It was a paved path through an area that featured tree species representing different countries and states.  A very pleasant, green place. This waterfall and pond was part of the scenery.  There were small goldfish in the pond, among the lily pads.

This is a panorama image – two separate photos joined together to give you a wider view. I was using a pretty wide angle lens to begin with, but it wasn’t wide enough to capture the full view you see here.

Lincoln in Atchison

Statue, Sculpture, Abraham Lincoln, Atchison, KS

A bronze sculpture of Abraham Lincoln was added to the grounds of the county court house of Atchison, Kansas in 2023. It commemorates a visit made by Lincoln in late November, 1859.

You can read about the history and the artist’s interesting thoughts on this sculpture by reading the article found here: Unexpected Lincoln – New Statue in Kansas

We took a short trip to Atchison this last weekend and I planned on focusing on interesting, old buildings. This very cool, historic building features features a large, seven story clock tower on one side.

Grasshopper for Lunch

Insect, Predator, Grasshopper,

Some kind of predator insect is preying on a small grasshopper while dangling from a green plant stem. The kind of scene nightmares are made of.

This shot was taken on a “slow walk” through the woods.  I often take slow walks – where I take a just a few steps at a time and pause to look closely at what might be near that I would surely miss if I just kept walking. This unusual wrestling match is easy to see when I’ve zoomed in to it, but it was just a tiny drama that normally would be missed. I have no idea of the kind of creepy bug that is with the grasshopper in it’s clutches. It looks like some kind of alien life form to me.

Summer’s End

Sunflower, Wilt, Orange, Flower

Two vibrant sunflowers with rich yellow and orange petals begin to wilt as the main stalk bows over signaling the end of Summer in northwest Missouri.

This was a sunflower planted on the edge of my father-in-law’s vegetable garden. For the most part, the gardening season is completed.

Lethal Apparition – B-2 Spirit

B-2 Bomber, Military, Jet, Aircraft

The Northrup B-2 Spirit was flying low at the Sound of Speed Airshow.  This American heavy, strategic aircraft is known as the Stealth Bomber. It features low-observable stealth technology designed to penetrate dense anti-aircraft defenses.

It is incredible to witness one fly by.  Very quiet on approach and it just seems crazy that this odd shaped thing can be airborne, much less attain a top speed of 628mph.

Where the Deer and the Antelope Lay

Pronghorn Antelope, Antelope, Buck, Horns

A pronghorn antelope buck was resting in a patch of prairie in South Dakota’s Custer State Park.  He wasn’t alone.  A hundred or so yards away his harem of does (6 or 7) were grazing in the prairie. Apparently, that’s the way it works in pronghorn culture.

Air Show Wall of Fire

Wall of Fire, Air Show, Thunderbirds, Jets, F-16

The “wall of fire” provided a dramatic backdrop to the Thunderbird’s F-16C Fighting Falcons at the Sound of Speed Airshow at Rosecrans Memorial Airport in St. Joseph, MO.

Tora, Tora, Tora – a reenactment of the bombing of Pearl Harbor – uses pyrotechnics to simulate the dropping of bombs from vintage warbirds and the wall of fire is their finale.

The Unite States Air Force air demonstration squadron Thunderbird jets are parked on the tarmac awaiting their part in the airshow.  Notice the Thunderbird’s crew member who is kneeling to take a photo of this cool (or should I say, HOT!) moment.

Suspicious Looking Character

Fly, Insect, Bug

On a platform overlooking the Missouri River at Indian Cave State Park in southeast Nebraska I spotted this strange, long-legged, fuzzy fly sitting on the weathered railing.  It reacted to our presence but didn’t fly away – not at first.  That gave me time to zoom in and snap a few images.

Patriots Tunnel Vision

Tunnel, Cars, Mount Rushmore

As cars drive through the Doane Robinson Tunnel in Custer State Park in South Dakota they get a perfectly framed view of the Mount Rushmore monument.

The scenic roadway through Custer State Park were carefully planned and tunnels dug to frame the monument.  Very cool to see.

Reflecting On the Mighty Mo

Missouri River, Clouds, Reflection, Water

This is a pleasant, peaceful view of the Missouri River – standing on the Nebraska shore, viewing the Missouri shore.  The cloud reflections in the water are what inspired me to take this shot. The tan areas in the foreground are where sunlight is filtering through the trees above, revealing the true color of the water.

We took a little trip to Indian Cave State Park.  It’s located in the southeastern part of Nebraska, near Shubert. This photo was taken at the parking area of the Indian Cave.

This is not the greatest image, technically.  I took this image with a wide, fisheye, lens – too get as much in the shot as I could.  I also took three bracketed shots, hand-held, which gave me the ability to even out the bright sky and clouds with the dark, shaded foreground. However, by not having the camera on a firm tripod, this image is not as sharp as I would like.
