Doc’s Nose

Aircraft, B-29, Bomber

This is a close-up of Doc’s nose. Doc is the name painted on the side of this historic aircraft; a vintage Boeing B-29 Superfortress. If you look closely, you can just barely see a painting of Doc, the character the plane is named for from Disney’s animated movie, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

This is an HDR image (three bracketed shots) that helped bring out the darker, interior of the aircraft. I find the intricate glass on the nose and metal frame a very cool design. I also like the way you can see reflections of people and surroundings in the polished stainless steel body of the aircraft. The polished metal surface and unique design elements highlight the historical significance of the airplane.

You can read about the history of this plane and the story of its restoration here: The B-29 Doc Story.

Reflecting On the Mighty Mo

Missouri River, Clouds, Reflection, Water

This is a pleasant, peaceful view of the Missouri River – standing on the Nebraska shore, viewing the Missouri shore.  The cloud reflections in the water are what inspired me to take this shot. The tan areas in the foreground are where sunlight is filtering through the trees above, revealing the true color of the water.

We took a little trip to Indian Cave State Park.  It’s located in the southeastern part of Nebraska, near Shubert. This photo was taken at the parking area of the Indian Cave.

This is not the greatest image, technically.  I took this image with a wide, fisheye, lens – too get as much in the shot as I could.  I also took three bracketed shots, hand-held, which gave me the ability to even out the bright sky and clouds with the dark, shaded foreground. However, by not having the camera on a firm tripod, this image is not as sharp as I would like.

Fishing by the Light

Kewaunee, Lighthouse, Sunrise

The Kewaunee, Wisconsin lighthouse stands at the end of a long pier – a spot often occupied by fishermen. If you look closely, you will see their silhouettes. (Click on the photo to see an enlarged version.)

Loving the Light

Sunrise, Lake Michigan, Kewaunee, Lighthouse

The Kewaunee, Wisconsin lighthouse and pier is dwarfed by the big, beautiful, dramatic sky at sunrise. The calm water reflects the colorful twilight hues of the clouds.

I just happened to be in Kewaunee last weekend and made it a point to get up way before I needed to for church to capture some sunrise views from the beach. This was actually snapped about 20 minutes before sunrise. On a scale of 1 to 10, I would rate this sunrise as a 7 or 8.  It was good enough to provide a number of good images…which I will be working on in the coming weeks.

This is a panorama of two combined shots. You can get a better, larger view by clicking on the photo.

Reflecting In Alabama

Creek, Reflection, Water

The tranquil Burnt Corn Creek meanders through Jennings Park in Brewton, Alabama, reflecting the surrounding greenery in the calm waters of this panoramic image.

I recently spent a weekend in Brewton Alabama. This creek runs along the border of Jennings Park – a beautiful attraction the locals can be proud of. It has paved trails, a long, raised boardwalk through a wooded area, an abundance of wild and cultivated flowers and this restful spot along the creek.

This panoramic image was produced by stitching five separate photos together to capture a wider perspective.  To really enjoy the scene, I encourage you to click on the photo to view a much larger version.

Coming In Hot

Algoma, Lighthouse, Sunrise, Lake Michigan

The Algoma, Wisconsin lighthouse and pier stands in silhouette against a dramatic sunrise sky, with contrails piercing through the clouds. The calm, cool Lake Michigan waters seem unaffected by the rising drama.

This is a companion image to “Path to Glory” that I posted May 21st. If you compare them it’s obvious, they were both taken on the same morning from a slightly different angle. This was a hidden gem I found on my hard drive from 2014.

Adjusting to the Morning Light

Sunrise, Lake, Dock, Bass Lake, IN, Indiana

The clouds and the rising sun seem to be collaborating to provide the right balance of color and light. This is an early morning view of Bass Lake, Indiana in September.

I love the way the sunrise is illuminating the low, misty kind of clouds in the upper right half of this scene. Give me a lake with interesting clouds and a rising sun any day.

Misty River Reflection

River, Mist, Fog, Sunrise, Kewaunee, Reflection

A calming sun rises over a bend in the Kewaunee River in northeast Wisconsin. warm light pierces the morning mist hugging the banks of the river. The calm water reflects the trees and sky, creating a symmetrical balance between nature’s elements.

This spot was a half mile down the road from our rural Kewaunee home. Most times, in search for a sunrise, I would pass by this spot on my way to the Lake Michigan shore to catch the sunrise along side the lighthouse. I believe the morning mist on the water caught my eye and garnered my attention.

Prepare for Flames

Sunrise, Lighthouse, Kewaunee, Beach

A serene sunrise casts a warm glow over Lake Michigan, highlighting the Kewaunee, WI lighthouse in the distance. On the sandy beach, two pyramids of firewood are prepared to provide warmth on shore.

This is an HDR image that was taken in May of 2020.  As I was processing this, I was tempted to swap out the sky because the original looked like it didn’t belong.  (But, of course, it does belong.)

Moment of Reflection

Wasp, Yellow Jacket, Water, Reflection

These common wasps seemed to be admiring themselves in the water’s reflection.  Actually, they were getting a drink at the birdbath in our yard.

I happened to notice a few wasps at the birdbath one day and keep watching.  I found a steady stream of wasps visiting the birdbath all day long.  Shortly after, I discovered a steady stream of wasps flying up into a corner of our house. They obviously they had built a nest there.

I also found a couple of wasp nests in the ground of our yard. It must have been a good year for wasps in our area. On a good note, they were never bothersome to us; a little worrisome when one found its way into the house, but no stings. (Ironically, my wife was stung by one while hiking during our vacation in South Dakota.)
