Fishnado

Image of a school of small fish.

This school of fish were swimming in a mesmerizing, circular formation in a large, cylindrical tank at the Wonders Of Wildlife National Museum & Aquarium in Springfield, Missouri.

The “Fishnado” title is playing off the fish cluster’s shape and circular movement similar to a tornado. This tank was probably 20 feet tall; spanning two floors  of the aquarium.  There was no noticeable pause in their motion which made it a dramatic and mesmerizing sight.

The light through much of the exhibits was kept pretty low; I assume to simulate the conditions of being deep under water.  It was difficult for my aging eyes and presented all kinds of challenges for the camera. If you look closely, you will notice the fish are not very sharp or detailed even though I did my best to digitally enhance this image.

Missouri River from Indian Cave State Park

A photo of the Missouri River from an overlook in Kansas.

The Missouri river meanders through lush greenery under a bright blue sky. The peaceful view is provided by an overlook at Indian Cave State Park in southeast Nebraska.

The Missouri river serves as the border between Nebraska and Missouri. The bluffs you see in the background are in Missouri. I think the sharp curve of the river at this point is interesting. If you look closely, near the center of the image you can see a small fishing boat along the line of rocks. (It’s pretty small.)

Fiery Atmosphere

A photo of the Kewaunee, WI lighthouse at sunrise. The lighthouse at Kewaunee, Wisconsin was awakened to a colorful sky on a calm summer morning.

This image was captured after we moved to Missouri. We were back in the area on a short visit last summer. I was blessed with a decent sky on the one morning I was able to get out there.

Touch of Teal

Wood Duck, Duck

A darling wood duck stands gracefully on a moss-covered perch at the edge of a rippling pond. In my mind, the highlight of this image is that little patch of teal on the wings. Such an appealing color.

I grabbed this shot while walking through the zoo in Topeka, KS. This was at one of their small ponds outside; not in any kind of enclosure.

Forest of Friendship Waterfall

Waterfall, Pond, Atchison

A small, tranquil waterfall flows into a pond filled with lily pads, surrounded by lush greenery and tall grasses. This serene setting was found at the International Forest of Friendship near Atchison, Kansas. It is known as the “Joe Carrigan Memorial Waterfall.”

We enjoyed our recent visit to the International Forest of Friendship.  It was a paved path through an area that featured tree species representing different countries and states.  A very pleasant, green place. This waterfall and pond was part of the scenery.  There were small goldfish in the pond, among the lily pads.

This is a panorama image – two separate photos joined together to give you a wider view. I was using a pretty wide angle lens to begin with, but it wasn’t wide enough to capture the full view you see here.

Straining to Interpret the Sky

Sunrise, Pano, Lighthouse, Sky, Lake Michigan, Kewaunee

Vibrant hues of orange and pink blend across the sky just before the sun rises over a calm Lake Michigan at Kewaunee, WI. The lighthouse stands alone on the horizon, silhouetted against the colorful backdrop.

This is a large image – vertical panorama.  It was the only way I could fit the substantial lake foreground and the expansive sky into the frame.

Fishing by the Light

Kewaunee, Lighthouse, Sunrise

The Kewaunee, Wisconsin lighthouse stands at the end of a long pier – a spot often occupied by fishermen. If you look closely, you will see their silhouettes. (Click on the photo to see an enlarged version.)

Loving the Light

Sunrise, Lake Michigan, Kewaunee, Lighthouse

The Kewaunee, Wisconsin lighthouse and pier is dwarfed by the big, beautiful, dramatic sky at sunrise. The calm water reflects the colorful twilight hues of the clouds.

I just happened to be in Kewaunee last weekend and made it a point to get up way before I needed to for church to capture some sunrise views from the beach. This was actually snapped about 20 minutes before sunrise. On a scale of 1 to 10, I would rate this sunrise as a 7 or 8.  It was good enough to provide a number of good images…which I will be working on in the coming weeks.

This is a panorama of two combined shots. You can get a better, larger view by clicking on the photo.

Tall Drink

Waterfall, Silver Falls State Park

A picturesque waterfall cascades down a rocky cliffside into a tranquil pool below, surrounded by lush greenery and moss-covered rocks. This is South Falls – a 177-foot (54 m) drop – at Silver Falls State Park near Portland, Oregon.

You can see this same fall from a different angle on my earlier post, South Falls at Silver Falls State Park.

Reflecting In Alabama

Creek, Reflection, Water

The tranquil Burnt Corn Creek meanders through Jennings Park in Brewton, Alabama, reflecting the surrounding greenery in the calm waters of this panoramic image.

I recently spent a weekend in Brewton Alabama. This creek runs along the border of Jennings Park – a beautiful attraction the locals can be proud of. It has paved trails, a long, raised boardwalk through a wooded area, an abundance of wild and cultivated flowers and this restful spot along the creek.

This panoramic image was produced by stitching five separate photos together to capture a wider perspective.  To really enjoy the scene, I encourage you to click on the photo to view a much larger version.
