Water
Soaking In The Shimmer
As we were hiking along the banks of Baird Creek in Green Bay, Wisconsin I spooked a small frog that dove for the water. It surfaced a moment later near a large rock. As it sat there, I was able to snap several photos.
This is my favorite photo from that hike. The reflection of the overcast sky on the rippling water created a very cool, shimmering effect. I didn’t expect this. It was a happy accident. The water seemed clear to my naked eye, but the camera picked up the refelection.
You can fill your screen with the cool shimmer by simply clicking on the photo. You’ll get a better look at the frog, too. It’s eyes are pretty neat.

Baird Creek Bed
This is a summertime view of Baird Creek – a natural treasure that winds through northeast Green Bay, Wisconsin.
I took this photo while on a recent hike along one of the well-kept nature trails that accompany the creek. It’s a great place to get out into nature while still in the city.

Angel in the Works
Here’s a happy photography accident. To me, it looks like an angel in white showed up to take part in the festivities during the fireworks display above the harbor at Kewaunee, Wisconsin. This image was captured during their July 3rd celebration of Independence Day 2023.
This is not any kind of photo magic. This is the way the separate rocket bursts were recorded. Love the colors.

Big Harry Fireworks Display
This is an unusual fireworks capture from the Fireworks display on July 3rd in Kewaunee, WI. This is one of my favorite perspectives of the Kewaunee show – from the west end of the harbor.
There’s a lot I like about this image. The fireworks burst is has an unusual color and flow. I love the reflections on the harbor. If you look closely, you will see a few tiny white dots. They are stars in the night sky. And, of course, the Tug Ludington all lit up in the foreground. Also note the bluish dot above the water near the middle of the photo. That is the light from the Kewaunee lighthouse.

Turbulent Time
It was a blustery, November afternoon and the wind and waves were kicking up quite a fuss at the Kewaunee, Wisconsin lighthouse. Kewaunee is located on the western shore of Lake Michigan.

Superior Gems
These are some of the beautiful rocks on the shore of Lake Superior in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. You’ll notice the effects of sunlight through the ripples as these were photographed in about 6 inches of water.
I took a similar photo many years ago and it was always one of my favorites. I’ve wanted to get back there and get more photos so, on a recent get-a-way to the UP, we made a trip to the beach at Grand Marais, MI.
I spent a long time trying to photograph through the water, in between the waves, to catch a calm enough moment when the waves wouldn’t obscure the beauty but the ripples would cast their magical spell over the rocks.
It was one of the most restful and enjoyable parts of our trip. We spent a good deal of time just sitting on the rocky beach, looking a rocks and enjoying the sunshine. My wife took a photo of me with her smart phone camera – catching me in action.

Kewaunee Sparkles
Fireworks light up the night sky over the Kewaunee, WI harbor. The Tug Ludington, a tourist attraction and permanent resident of the harbor, was a quiet observer.
One of my photographic joys is capturing fireworks. Kewaunee is a couple of miles from my home, so I try to make their annual display. I’ve photographed their fireworks from a number of locations over the years but this spot, at the edge of the harbor is one of my favorites. I love the reflection from the calm water. The tug adds a nice point of interest.

Lakeland Desert
The calm water, thin clouds and intense sun reminded me of a lone building stranded in the middle of a desert wasteland.
This sunrise appeared behind the Kewaunee, Wisconsin lighthouse and pier on the western shore of Lake Michigan. This image was captured in May of 2020.

Lake Light Bright
The rising sun seemed to be striving to hold its own against an encroaching cloud bank behind the Kewaunee, Wisconsin lighthouse and pier. Kewaunee is located on the western shore of Lake Michigan.
This shot was captured in color but I thought it would be more dramatic in monochrome. Even though the sun is providing a stellar performance, the overall image maintains a dark and brooding feel. It wasn’t a great morning for sunrise photos but he sunbeams captured in this frame seem pretty cool to me.

Emotional Distancing
In times of darkness and difficulty, it is only natural that we look to The Light.
This is a very emotionally moving image for me. Without getting too sappy; this image speaks what my heart has been feeling amidst the recent chaos, confusion, and wholesale upheaval of our world.
In these times, I’m not looking to some activist group or the government or some celebrity or even well-intentioned family and friends for clear guidance and direction. I look to the Light of the World, Christ Jesus and His Word to bring understanding, direction and peace to my life.
I got up early to capture the sunrise at Algoma, WI. However, the sun and sky didn’t provide what I was hoping for. Still, I kept shooting. After all, I’d made the effort to get there, maybe something of interest would emerge. I thought it was pretty much a “learning experience” until I viewed this frame on the computer. The color was pretty bland, so I decided to convert it to monochrome and… Well, I think I found a diamond in the rough. It’s not a great “photographic effort” technically, but it moves me. (That’s why we call it, “Art.”)
I think this image is much more powerful when viewed larger. You can see a full-screen image by clicking on the photo.
