Two-tailed Swallowtail Butterfly

Two-Tailed Swallowtail, Butterfly, Yellow

A vibrant, yellow, Two-tailed Swallowtail butterfly works to draw the nectar from a purple thistle, showing off its striking yellow and black wings accented by blue dots on the tail.

I captured this image while photographing a herd of bison on the prairie at Custer State Park in South Dakota.  While focused on the buffalo, this flash of color caught my eye and I immediately changed focus. So, in the middle of my strip of large, brown beasts is a few frames of this delicate beauty.

Going for Gold

Bee, Bumblebee, Orange-Belted Bumblebee, Wildflower, Yellow

While hiking a trait to a waterfall in Spearfish Canyon, South Dakota, I spotted a patch of yellow wildflowers.  The flowers were humming with busy bees. As I focused in on the bees, I noticed the orange area of their abdomen. While processing this image I did a quick internet search and learned these are orange-banded bumblebees. I don’t think I’ve seen this variety (Bombus ternarius) before.  If you zoom in, you can see the legs of the bee covered with pollen from the flowers. You can learn more about this variety of bee at Bees Wiki.

Rambling Wild Beauty

Wild Rose, Wildflower, White

These delicate white flowers are a version of a Wild Rose. This plant was found on a hike through the woods of northwest Missouri. Don’t you love the pink bud?

Fall Creeping Up

Vine, Tree, Fall Colors, Autumn

Autumn leaves in shades of red, orange, and green climb a tree trunk with rough, textured bark. This seemed like a nice mix texture and autumn hues which I captured on a hike through the woodlands of Branson, Missouri.

Tuliptree Blossom with Guest

Tuliptree, Flower, Insect

A vibrant green tuliptree flower with a rich yellow center is in full bloom, surrounded by large, lobed leaves. Some sort of insect is nestled in the flower’s petals, possibly collecting nectar or pollen.

Also shown in this photo is one of the tuliptree’s cone-like seed clusters that sit upright on the branches.  The tuliptree is one of the largest native trees in North America. It is a member of the magnolia family and has distinct tulip shaped flowers. The golden-yellow fall color of the tuliptree makes this an excellent choice for large landscapes.

I found this tuliptree in bloom while strolling the grounds at College of the Ozarks, just south of Branson, Missouri.

Getting this shot was not an easy task.  The blooms are up in a tree, well above my head and reach.  To get this image, I employed a monopod.  I extended it the full length, set the camera’s timer and guessed at the focal distance.  Then, after pressing the shutter button to activate the timer, I hoisted the camera above the bloom and waited for the “click” sound.  Then I’d lower it to eye level and look at the result. It took about six or seven attempts to get the correct framing and sharpness.

Tulip Time

Flowers, Tulips, Pella

Vibrant tulips in shades of white, yellow, red, and orange bloom during Tulip Time in Pella, IA.

This is a photo I found on my hard drive from a springtime visit to Pella a few years ago.  If you like photographing flowers, Tulip Time in Pella offers a spectacular display of color and variety.  This year, Tulip Time in Pella is May 2nd through the 4th.

Prickly Poppy

Poppy, Prickly Poppy, Flower

This was a delightful find!  This is a prickly poppy.  I didn’t know this type of flower existed until I found this one by happenstance.

On our recent trip to Custer State Park in South Dakota, we had pulled over in the area of a small prairie dog town.  As I was trying to get some good photos of the prairie dogs, I noticed this white flower.  It was the only one in that area.  I believe I found this particular bloom at its peak.  We have poppies at our home in northeast Wisconsin but they are the large, redish-orange variety that have a very short blooming period in early spring.  Finding this delicate white flower on a prickly plant blooming in late summer was a nice surprise.

From the little I was able to find online, the prickly poppy is a beautiful wildflower that lives for only one growing season. It grows naturally in sandy, dry areas. New plants grow from seed produced the previous year. The papery white flowers bloom throughout the summer.  The plant has blue-green leaves and the stems are covered with sharp spines.

Sweet Memorable Bouquet

Flower, Forget Me Nots

This sweet, petite bouquet of flowers were found blooming on the banks of Baird Creek in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The whole group is not much bigger than the end of my thumb. These are commonly known as Forget-Me-Nots.

I learned that these flowers had an ancient Greek name (μυοσωτίς) that translates as “mouse’s ear”  It is the official flower of Alaska.  They are some of my favorite wildflowers to find, even though they are difficult to photograph well because of their diminutive size.  Of course, I also think they are pleasantly pretty.

The Wild Bunch

Daisy, Wildflower, Daisies

An abundance of these daisies spring up in our back yard every year. They are a welcome, cheery sight; at least for the short season they bloom.

One of the aspects of this photo that I love are all the perfect imperfections of these wildflowers.

Friendly Faces

Wildflowers, Yellow, Flowers

You can always count on finding simple beauty as you walk through the countryside when wildflowers are in bloom.  These were found along a path as we hiked through a wooded area in our rural, northeast Wisconsin neighborhood.
